A hiking track leading to a footbridge over a creek

Hello!

Today’s photograph is from the latest meander and iPhone 13 Pro Max test. I’m enjoying using this phone as a personal camera but still miss the depth (or to put it slightly less technically, the balls) of a physically larger sensor. The colours are certainly acceptable and the clarity of the image is wonderful, but there’s just the oomph missing still.

What goals did you set yourself during the lockdown and what goals did you actually achieve?

I’m not a big fan of goal setting as the inevitable failure always upsets me and nobody needs that kind of sadness in their life.

But this lockdown has been harder than the past ones for me and I felt it was time for the big one. No messing around with the little goals. I’m going straight for the mothership of all life-altering goals. I was finally going to do it. No procrastination. No holding back.

I was finally going to memorise the chords to the middle section of “The Girl From Ipanema”.

I know right? Wow! Talk about aiming for the sky!

It’s always amazed me that as a musician I can remember a song’s arrangement (the form or structure) from 20 years ago, but chords and lyrics always abandon me when needed. I’m one of those musicians who rely on a tablet when required to sing as unless I have performed the song 2351 times (approximately), I’m, to put it mildly, in a personal watercraft floating on an excrement filled body of water without the required propelling device.

TGFI (as it will be forever known) is the kind of song that’s great to have under your belt at a gig or rehearsal when you are waiting on another person to find something … Quickly launching into TGFI can bring a chuckle from the crowd. The problem I’ve always had is that unless I was on drums, I would be in deep trouble if we did this and hit the middle section as I never knew it.

Readers of my blog, yes I’m talking to both of you. I am proud to report that it will no longer be a problem. After thirty years I can now launch happily into the middle section without music with the confidence I have when versing it up. And with my drummers’ innate ability to transpose chords into a new key on the spot, I should be able to fumble through if for some unknown (but terrifying) reason someone performs the song out of its original and government-mandated key of F.

If you need to take a moment to let this amazing achievement settle in, please do so. I’ll wait. I’ll even hum TGFI whilst I do.

I look forward to being able to use this in the near future. Those whom I play with can expect me to throw it in at any stage just to put it to the test.

Now that’s enough about me. Let’s talk about you. What goal(s) have you set and/or achieved this lockdown?

That’s it for now. Thanks for reading, I really appreciate your time and interest. Talk to you soon. Stay safe.

Richard
