Hello!
Entry number 10 in the 365 Black & White Challenge is from the pier at Seaford beach.
Whilst listening to the Djokovic hearing today, I’m reminded of what a remarkable person one has to be to become a judge. Not just in a legal sense, but compassion, empathy, and so blinkered to their own opinions or prejudices that any applicant or defendant can be sure they are being given a fair hearing.
I also love listening to barristers and over the years have come to the conclusion that the fewer words used to get one’s point across, in my view, the better the barrister they are.
Back in the military music days, we performed at a dinner at Vic Barracks. The dinner was extending the hand of friendship to the occupants of the newly constructed building next door, most of them being lawyers and barristers. When it came time for the speech to thank the military for their hospitality, most of the band went outside for a rest. I stayed to listen and was rewarded with one of the most concise speeches I ever heard. Not a superfluous word was uttered and the delivery was perfect, conveying perfectly the appreciation felt and enjoyed by the visitors and the hopes to make this an annual occasion.
The barrister representing the Government has even gone as far as to mock himself in his submissions to the bench “Finally, I think it will be useful for Your Honour to consider two cases – both of them losses of mine, so I’ll be revisiting happy memories.” A sign of a gifted barrister, being able to create levity without detracting from the point.
As for the case itself, I do believe Novak should have taken the opportunity to get vaccinated as is clearly requested by Tennis Australia and Australia itself. But listening to his legal team, he’s invested money into some clever people. They are not contesting the vaccination, they are contesting the process … and are doing it well.
I will be watching with great interest.
Have a great day and I’ll see you in the next post.
