Hello!

Entry number 115 for the 2022 365 Black & White Challenge is a photo from my home.

Two Australian Army slouch hats hang from a rack.
2022 365 Black & White Challenge – 115/365

Sunday

When this is published, it will be Anzac Day. These two slouch hats are one of the few specific things mentioned in my will and mean the world to me. Why do I have two? One with the brim permanently up and the other with it permanently down. Depending on the event, you wore the hat differently.

I served in the military for a total of nineteen years as a musician and a later as a photographer. Every Anzac Day as part of a band, I would march down Swanston Street towards the Shrine of Remembrance, an incredible sight.

We would always do the march at least twice to make up the number of bands required. One year, we had to do the march three times … that was a day.

But it was always the one day of the year we never minded marching. Especially when you saw the veterans marching.

Let me interrupt the flow to bring you a message from our sponsor, Me! Did you love the photo? Each photograph in the 2022 365 Black & White Challenge is made available as a single signed limited edition print. If you are interested, you can purchase the print at the Shop for only $36.50 (including free postage to anywhere in the world). If it’s not there then someone beat you to it! I thank you for your support of my photography and this website.

I miss the army days, but that time has passed. And I always have my hats. Not bought at Aussie Disposals, but issued, by the army. Pretty much the only physical reminders I have left.

When I die, each of my two children will get one of these hats. The eldest knows what they mean to me and in a few years, I’ll let the younger one know too.

This isolation has caused me to miss out on many things I was looking forward to. Due to Anzac Day falling on the last day of my isolation, I am unable to go to the parade which I very much wanted to do. I wanted very much to walk around and photograph the veterans on one of my favourites days of the year.

If you’ve made it this far, thank you for your time and your attention! I will see tomorrow you for the next post.

Richard
